Hong Chang Su Fails to Defend WBC Title

The World Boxing Council Super Flyweight Title Match was held in Yokohama Arena, Japan, where Hong Chang Su, Hero of Labor of the DPRK and People’s Sportsman of the DPRK, fought with Kawashima Katsushige and was defeated by technical knockout in the first round.

It was his 9th match for him to defend the WBC title. He had succeeded in defending his title 8 times so far.

There were about 1,000 Koreans in the arena who came from various parts of Japan to cheer Hong Chang Su.

Hong took a hard punch in his face by his opponent at 1 minute and 47 seconds in the first round. Hong got up by using all his strength, but took continuous blows by the opponent and became unable to play any more.

Though Hong Chang Su couldn’t give his best at the game, he received the cheers of the audiences with a smile. He said, “I couldn’t give my best, as I made up my mind to rush in hurry. The game ended before I would play my boxing,” and added, “I will think of my future plan without haste. I appreciate the people who cheered me with my whole heart.”

Hong Chang Su always gave power and courage to Korean residents in Japan. Though he was defeated this time, all Koreans were encouraged as well and were thankful to Hong and wish that he will continue boxing and encourage Koreans in the future, too.
