Chemical Weapons Stored in South Korea
Disclosure
of the fact that south Korea secretly keeps a large quantity of chemical weapons
is creating a sensation among people in Korea.
The
largest south Korean daily, Chosun Ilbo, reported on May 9 that the south Korean
army has been secretly destroying chemical weapons at Yongdong, North Chungchong
Province in central south Korea, citing unidentified sources.
According
to the report, the south Korean army built special chemical plants in Youngdong
last October to incinerate various chemical weapons after joining the Chemical
Weapons Convention (CWC) in April 1997.
An
Environmental Ministry official of the south admitted to the plant’s existence while
Defense Ministry spokesman Yoon Il Young refused to directly comment on the
report, saying “Issues related to chemical weapons have a great impact on
national security.”
Alarmed
by the report, Youndong villagers and environmental groups sent letters to the
authorities calling for an explanation on the fact and a possible impact of the
facility.
Park
Wan Jin, the chief of Youngdong County, said he had never been informed of he
secret facilities and would demand that the army take appropriate actions.
On
May 9, the Green Federation, an environmental organization in south Korea,
released a statement urging the south’s
army authorities to fully disclose to the public the data related to the
possession of chemical weapons and to take a measure for protecting the lives of
people and the environment from contamination by chemical weapons.
So
far, the United States and south Korean authorities have been condemning the
DPRK for the suspicion of developing chemical weapons, while they have been
openly preparing for a biological and chemical war in the Korean Peninsula.
Recently,
the U.S. army has organized four new chemical units under the second division
and the 19th theater supporting command of the U.S. forces stationed in south
Korea under the pretext of “coping with” the non-existent “threat of
biological and chemical weapons” from the DPRK, a KCNA report said on May 10.
The recently disclosed fact of chemical weapons in south Korea clearly shows who really wants a tragic war, while proving that the plan of the U.S. and south Korea for a biological and chemical war is being put into practice.
