He had three sons and his family seemed to get richer and richer. However, he had one dissatisfaction, -- he had no daughter, whom he wanted so much to have. Just then, he received news that his daughter was born to him so that all his family members were pleased with this happy news.
When the daughter reached five years of age, something strange happened to them - cattle and horses began to die one by one even if they did not get ill.
The rich man was so anxious that he called the first son and said, "Watch the sheds all night long to see what happens there."
As his father's order, the first son watched all the sheds of livestock all night long.
Then he found out the daughter, who was supposed to be sleeping in bed, steeped into one of the sheds from her room. She suddenly thrust her hand to a cow from its back, took out its liver and devoured it like an animal. The cow died instantly. The first son was so astonished at this sight that he couldn't breathe.
The daughter, after finishing her "dinner," washed her blood-smeared hands and mouth and quietly crept into her mother's bed.
The next morning, the first son told his father about all the unbelievable facts that had been the previous night.
"What are you talking about? Maybe you had a nightmare!" said his father with anger.
Then, the second son was given the task of keeping watch on the sheds. He also saw the terrible sight with his own eyes like his elder brother. When the father got the news from the second son the next morning, he got furious about what he heard, "What untrustworthy sons you are. You are blaming my daughter because you are jealous of her. Go away anywhere! I don't need despicable men like you."
The last son was also assigned the work of keeping watch but he didn't want to be driven out from his home. So, he told a lie to his father. "Cattle and horses fell and died of an unknown illness at night." "Of course it was not because of my daughter, but why did the cattle and houses die in such a way?" The father had no mean of asserting it.
The first and the second son, who had been wandering aimlessly, were helped by a bonze when they lost their way in deep maintains. He was one of the remarkable bonzes and was training himself in the mountains. The brothers received training from him while helping him in his house-work and improved their character very much.
One day, the brothers told his master bonze about the circumstances under which they had been driven away from their home and proposed to go home because they were anxious about their parents. Accepting their proposal, the master gave them horses and three phials.
"The white phial contains thorn seeds, once you throw the phial, there will spread a thicket of thorns. The red phial contains a fire source. Once you throw the phial, you can spread a sea of flames. The blue phial is a water source. Once you throw the phial, a vast expanse of water will appear. When you are in a dangerous situation, use these and they will be helpful to you. Take good care of yourself."
The brothers went back to their home but there was no sign of life to be seen. The home-gate was leaning to one side, grass was growing thick and wild. They stealthily stepped through the gate, when there appeared the daughter from the tall grass. "Oh dear, my brothers! Welcome home! I've been waiting for you for a long time!"
Looking at her face, they found the daughter did not look like a human being - her eyes were bloodshot and slanting upward, the edge of her mouth reached her ears. They came to know the daughter had taken the lives of the parents, the youngest brother, a lot of servants and a large number of livestock by eating them. The brothers shivered with fear. Then, they rode their horses and got away from her when she was off guard.
Looking behind, the daughter was chasing them by changing herself into a monster of a big fox.
"Stop, my brothers! You look very delicious. Don't run away."
She cried out and was about to catch the tails of the horses. At that moment, the elder brother threw the white phial at the fox, and then there spread a thicket of thorns and the fox got entangled in it. The brothers ran away far from the fox while the monster was struggling to pull itself from the thorns.
When after a while, the fox reached the tails of the horses, the elder brother threw the red phial at it, then there spread a blazing inferno. The fox was covered with flames and got seriously burned, but it continued to chase them.
The elder brother threw the blue phial at the fox with all his might, and then there spread a vast expanse of sea behind them.
However, the fox didn't stop following them, and crossing the sea, it swam across the sea to the brothers. But the fox was exhausted, and at last it drowned in the sea.
At last, the brothers came back to their birthplace and worked together to build their fine home again.
