Successfully winding up the Aug. 14-15 gala, “the Grand Festival for National Reconciliation, Unity and Reunification,” two Hanchongryun delegates, Kim Tae Won and Hwang Son, visited historical and scenic sites in north Korea for a week as members of a joint excursion team of Pomchonghakryun to visit historical sites in the north.
They explored on August 17 and 18 historical relics on Mt. Myohyang, one of the five famous mountains of Korea.
The joint excursion team, participated in by delegates of Pomchonghakryun (the national Alliance of Youth and Students for the Country’s Reunification) from the north, south and overseas, went around Pohyon Temple with a history of nearly 1,000 years, which was built during the Koryo dynasty period (AD 918-1392), the first unified state of Korea, and climbed the Sangwon Valley.
Kim Tae Won said that Mt. Myohyang is a scenic mountain for its beautiful features and clear water and that, when the country is reunified, he will come to the mountain again.
After their excursion to Mt. Myohyang, they visited the Korean Central History Museum and historical relics in Pyongyang on August 19.
Meanwhile, a symposium on historical relics in north Korea was held on Mt. Myohyang on August 18, sponsored by Pomchonghakryun.
Korean youth and students in the north, south and overseas took the floor on the subjects “significance of the disinterment of King Tangun’s tomb in the history of national reunification” and “significance of historical relics of the Koguryo and Koryo period in the history of national reunification.”
Hwang Son pointed out in her speech that the symposium was of great importance for enabling her to acquire a correct understanding of the Korean nation’s history, which is losing its identity due to the division of the country.
“The mausoleum of King Tangun is a spiritual asset of the Korean nation, and is a symbol of one nation and one country,” she added.
From August 20 to 22, Kim Tae Won and Hwang Son visited Mt. Paekdu with other members of the joint excursion team.
They climbed to the top of the mountain and saw sunrise on Mt. Paekdu. The team members toured Lake Chon on the top of Mt. Paekdu and collected samples of rare rocks and plants.
After her visit to Mt. Paekdu, Hwang Son said that she would certainly visit the mountain again together with a million students in the south when the country is reunified.
Ri Jong Su, head of the overseas Pomchonghakryun, said Mt. Paekdu is an ancestral and revolutionary mountain symbolic of the strong spirit and soul of the Korean nation and a sacred mountain of the 70 million Koreans.
Meanwhile, the joint excursion team, which had held a kickoff ceremony at Kim Il Sung University on August 10, was disbanded at a parting ceremony on August 22, winding up all its programs successfully.
Hanchongryun Delegates Meet Ri In Mo
Kim Tae Won and Hwang Son, delegates from the South Korean Federation of University Students Councils (Hanchongryun), on August 25 met Ri In Mo, 81, an old revolutionist, who is well known as an incarnation of faith and will.
The two delegates, who had expressed a strong wish to meet Ri In Mo since the first day of their visit to the north, brought him news of unconverted long-term prisoners in the south.
They said that by reading his notes they came to know about what had made him fight for reunification, upholding his principles even under harsh persecution in the south.
On behalf of one million students in south Korea, they made a vow to fight to the last for national reunification.
